This month we were graced with the presence of Joan Matthews, who grows an abundance of unusual chrysanthemum varieties. Matthews and others have revived the Central Carolina Chrysanthemum Society, which disbanded in 2007. Did you know there are 13 different classes of mums? The Society is concerned that the mums we once saw in our grandparents' gardens will eventually be a thing of the past. Please visit www.mums.org/north-carolina/for more information or attend a meeting at JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh who welcomes new members. Our September meeting was a relaxing event where members participating in a Herbal Pot Luck where we shared food, stories and good company. The herbs came from gardens and spice cabinets and included a nice variety of dishes. We will held a brief business meeting to report the outcome of our Scholarship Fundraiser event.
Our March meeting included a presentation by Matt Jones and Jane McLaurin from The Harnett County Master Gardener Extension Office. The title of their presentation "Planting For Success". Information included soil preparation (don't forget the soil test), proper planting procedures and garden maintenance.
Our club president dazzled and inspired us with a plethora of size, color and seasonal conifers to accommodate any home landscape. Joan's love of conifers is witnessed in her enthusiasm and appearance within her own garden surroundings. Iseli Nursery in Oregon served as a wonderful resource for her presentation.
This month we also began a new feature entitled "Garden Chat." Time was allotted for members to share a brief description of a garden favorite or happening within their yard. We invited Snell Tree Experts, certified arborists, to speak on the most common tree issues in our area. They discussed and provided examples of proper pruning, mulching, root care and planting. In addition they advised us on diseases and pests which can harm our trees.
