Rebecca Kaenzig and Sarah Gilley presented a program on the Daniel Boone Native Gardens in Boone, NC. The Gardens were begun with the cooperation of the Boone Garden Club and the Garden Club of NC as a dream was for a place for conservation of native plant species and education. The Daniel Boone Native Gardens were officially opened in June, 1963. Be sure to support and visit Daniel Boone Native Gardens while in the area.
Virginia (Ginny) Parker, current President of the Herb Society of Wake County, spoke to our club on March 20 about herbs. She brought booklets to give us with the herbs she highlighted in her slide presentation. There are so many herbs to talk about but Ginny highlighted 16-plus favorites grown in North Carolina and told us about their growth habits, sun and soil needs, etc. It was interesting to see different cultivars of herbs from the ones most often grown: prostrate juniper, for instance, and different varieties of basil and mint. Ginny also mentioned Artemesia, which is herb of the year for 2014. Ginny was a charming, genial presenter. Having been President of District 10 of the Garden Club of North Carolina, she said she enjoyed being with us--she likes getting out to different garden club meetings to learn what they are doing. Landscape Architect, Tom Joyce, is a NC native who has recently moved back to the area from Williamsburg, VA. He presented basic landscaping details and then elaborated on ways to enhance our yard. He elaborated on ways to bring interest & creativity into the landscape. He also encouraged us to think outside the box and explained how our yards should be an extension of your living area as you look out the window. Contact Tom at [email protected] .
Our meeting at The Garden Hut was a hands-on experience learning about and making a terrarium to brighten out homes throughout the year. Karen and Carol led the way teaching and assisting us so everyone completed an interesting and pleasing product.
What a wonderful holiday meeting we had last night! Beautiful music provided by BLYS (bliss) doesn't begin to describe the magic of this group and their hammered dulcimers. Steve & Laurie Lympany and Mike Schafale completed their program with everyone singing Silent Night and a fun encore about eating Grandma's jar harvest. The members never cease to provide an abundance of enticing dishes providing a perfect opportunity to socialize and gain new recipes. After a brief meeting we had our Installation of Officers for 2014. Ken Hardee presented descriptive information on growing gourds for artistic purposes. It turns out that it is quite the task! He now concentrates on the craving and decorating of gourds creating simple birdhouses and finely crafted ornaments and bowls. He was also very gracious and gave away quite a few of his works of art- Thank You Ken! Want to see some of his work? Visit The Lone Star Mercantile across from Applebee's on Hwy. 401 the next time you are driving by.
Just when you think you knew a lot about plants- you find out there is still much more to learn! Peggy Jones and Lisa Benzick from Jones' Greenhouse entertained and informed us about maintanance, fertilizing, repotting, etc. Stop by there when you are in downtown Fuquay -they are located at 517 Sunset Drive.
Members brought an amazing plethora of herbal dishes to enjoy during a presentation by Donna Pierce from Flowers on Broad in Varina. We watched in awe as she created fall arrangements and a wreath which she donated to the club. Stop by her shop to appreciate Donna's talents and creativity.
